Is the factory-issued waterproofing enough, or should I scotchgard?

I bought a new pair of Timberland work boots today as my old ones were wearing out after about 4 years. The tag says that they are waterproof, but should I scotchgard them to be extra sure? I live in New England, so I will be using them to shovel and to get to classes in snowy and rainy conditions.
