Does anyone have any experience with "conscious discipline"?

Asked by knitfroggy (8982points) April 12th, 2010

My 7 year old son has ADHD. He takes medication to help with this. He does well at school, is very obedient, does well, reads 4th grade level books in the 1st grade, etc.

The problem is at home. He has what we call “meltdowns”. He will rage and scream-generally make himself and everyone else miserable. Last week he had a four hour rage because I wouldn’t buy him a new video game. He had been in therapy, but it basically consisted of the therapist chewing his ass for 50 minutes once a month. We quit him.

We met with a new therapist today. She spoke about my son having trouble with “transitioning” in situations and that we needed to maybe look into “conscious discipline”. I think this new therapist is going to help us, and I’m really excited about it. She is going to see him weekly and try some different tactics. Luckily there is a seminar Thursday night that we are thinking of attending on conscious discipline. Has anyone heard of conscious discipline or used it? I’m not at all opposed to it, I will try anything at this point to make my son’s life easier to live.
