I listen to books-on-CDs all the time. What would be the best gadget to replace CDs on a Walkman (that eats AA batteries) ?

I am completely unfamiliar with Kindle, Sony Reader, iPods, Mp3’s and the like. I have no interest in listening to music…just uploading books. Any ideas?
