What does the red "BRAKE" light mean on a BMW X5?

My wife drives a 2006 BMW X5. This evening on the way home a red “BRAKE” light appeared on her dash. I am having a hard time figuring out exactly what this means. Low brake fluid? Brakes need replacing? Thoughts? Thanks!
