What does it mean if people have been getting their "messages crossed"?

I read an essay called Satires in C Major, which writes ”...lovers of Australian poetry have been getting their messages crossed. Gwen Harwood turns out to be the most accomplished poet the country produced in the 20th century.”
In this context, does it mean that lovers of Australian poetry have had mixed impressions on whether Harwood is a good poet or not?
