How do we stop gang violence?

I’ve been mesmerized by that television show Gangland.

It seems to me that most of those gangs are kept somewhat in check by the local authorities, but it takes some degree of extremely bold and brutal murders to get a proper response.

What I’m mostly concerned about is the new wave of Mexican Drug Cartel Gangs. They receive military style training and reach a new level of gruesome cruelty against anyone who speaks out against them… Including government officials. From the program, not only do they take over entire cities just south of the US border, but they are in league with American gangs and beginning to give orders for murders in our country.

How do we stop this?

I’m certain to be attacked for even mentioning this, but when do things get bad enough to justify US Military invasion? I’m not suggesting this as needed, but if the Mexican Drug Cartel’s stop at nothing to achieve their goals, should not the US Government be allowed to consider doing the same in order to protect our country from a bordered threat?

Perhaps another solution would be greater public education about drugs. If we are the demand, then can we really blame the supplier? But if poverty isn’t addressed as well, could education offer any solutions? I think not.

What affect would the legalization of drugs have upon the Mexican drug trafficking? Really now, consider this as a non violent possible solution. If drugs were legalized, what violence would arise from that? Yes, there would be those who become addicted… But we already have that situation… with illegal and even legal prescription drugs.

Would the gangs just turn to different crimes other than drug trafficking if drugs were legalized?

Lastly, one of the common themes that seems to entice young males to join gangs… is a lacking male role model, or father figure. Apparently the young men are searching for male bonding and approval, of which the gangs provide them. Do the men in our nation need to rise up and take responsibilities for their children? Are we suffering the curse of our own bastard sons? Where are the male leaders?
