What is the purpose of Patriotism?

Like fashion, food, ideals, and morality, patriotism is one of those things that we have taken and forsaken. We have changed it’s intent, and put it under a category which is defined by the opinion of millions world wide! So today I want to know, in your mind:
what the purpose is of patriotism in the new age and how it changed from when you were a child to now?
and
do you think that we as an American people are still a proud country of Patriots, or a country who’s Patriots have fallen to the fallacy of what our Televisions, Newspapers, and Internet News Sites have propagated?
