Should the US treasury phase out the penny?

Pennies waste space and it costs the US mint a lot of dough to make pennies even if they are not all copper anymore. Can’t this country just go on the Nichol standard and just keep pennies for financial math and round down to the lowest penny whereas transactions are concerned.
