Are seagulls really that common over parking lots?

I had this conversation with my father yesterday, and neither of us were sure. We get a ton of seagulls at our malls and shopping centers – but we are relatively close to the Great Lakes. We also have another large body of water nearby.

So, does everyone have seagulls in their parking lots?
