Why did my dog love kisses?

Hersheys Kisses, that is. His name was Toby, a medium-size poodle that was truly rough and tough for his size. Toby’s favorite time of the year was Christmas. When Hersheys Kisses were abundant, especially in his Christmas stocking. Toby wanted his kisses and ours, too. Toby was a greedy poodle that would fight a bear over his Hershey Kisses. Chocolate is suppose to be bad for dogs, but not Toby. He thrived on chocolate. Toby met his death protecting his bag of Hershey Kisses. This was no surprise to us. We miss him. Qustion: If chocolate is not recommended for dogs, then why did chocolate not have any ill effects on our poodle Toby?
