How does canned laughter get canned?

Do producers of television shows ask people to come in and ask them, on command, to produce different kind of laughter (for different kind of situations/jokes)?
Or do they use old laughter from other television shows and put these on tape?
Is there a person whose job it is to pick the right laughs for the right situations/jokes and put them at the exact position on the tape?
