What does OP stand for, in reference to someone asking a question?

Sorry, I should have been able to figure this out by now but I can’t. I’m not even certain OP refers to the one asking the question, but it looks like it is. I always think it means “offending party” but I’ve seen it used several times in a way that makes me think otherwise.
