Is it possible to have photo's taken on my DSLR transferred directly to my computer as I take them, via USB?

i.e. As i took the photo it was transferred directly onto the computer instead of importing them from the SD card. Nikon D40, can use Leopard or XP

You can. The software that came with the camera should be able to tether. I do know that Aperture 2 by Apple does also allow for tethering

The other option is purchase the Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 for 150$. It will allow you to “tether” the Nikon to your computer, ether mac or XP, both can be used. It allows you to operate your camera from your computer threw USB, (or with a WiFi plugin, threw WiFi)
