How can I learn the art of sketching ?

Asked by gamefu91 (591points) December 11th, 2010

I am amazed and fascinated by the art of sketching.I want to master this art, particularly face sketching. How to start about this? I am pretty sure I won’t find any art school nearby. Any videos available for this? Any online courses? Anything that might be useful for me?

You could go to the library and check out any number of books on the subject.
I have been drawing since I was little. My mom had my drawings from when I was two years old:)
We would draw together often and on anything too,I would even draw in the dirt on the road with a stick.Just start anywhere!

There is an excellent book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Get a paper and pencil, check out the book from the library, and do the exercises in the book. Most people don’t need to be trained how to sketch, they need to be trained how to see. Once you can see what is really there, sketching is easy.

@noelleptc and others are right, good ways to start. Contour and gesture, training your eyes to see, and sharing the experience to grow. Find out if others in your area share this interest and you could start a group—model for each other or chip in for a model.

There are many excellent do it yourself book available at your local art supply store. I suggest a class would be better, because of the feedback and personal attention.

There are also various How to Draw sites on the web for you to try out.

@gamefu91 A sketch is a rapidly done freehand drawing not intended to be the finished work. It is intended to be a quick method of recording a scene for later use. Choose from this Good search list for a site that works for you, or do your own Google search. For books, go to Amazon.com and type a search for “How to sketch people”.
