How to do mimicry and mimic the voices of celebrities or friends or anyone we know?

Asked by gamefu91 (591points) December 25th, 2010

How can I do mimicry and make my voice sound like someone else? I don’t know how some people can mimic voices so well.I want to do this also.If you have done it,how did you do it? If you know someone who does this, how do they do it? This is really amazing thing and i think it is an acquired art.

There are two ways to go about this.

1. Be born with the natural gift of being able to listen to sounds/voices and just repeat what you’ve heard. Like any natural gift from birth like being able to draw, sing, dance, act or other artistic behavior you can learn to develop it further but you already have the gift.

2. You completely lack the natural ability to mimic another’s voice but with the help of a voice teacher/coach and countless hours of grueling work you can slowly learn to ‘copy’ another’s voice. Actors learn how to ‘lose’ an accent that keeps them from being widely accepted.

However, people who have wanted to dance and spent thousands of dollars (even small fortunes) many times never master the natural rhythm of a dancer.

I say go for it. But if you want people to actually believe that you are Jack Nicholson, it’s not going to happen over night.

It requires a “good ear” like that in music.

Are you in college (at uni in UK)? Does your school offer courses in linguistics? Courses in articulatory phonetics or dialectology might help you mimic regional accents. Musical voice training can help you mimic other vocal characteristics. Acting courses might also help.

I recently discovered that I’m actually quite good at doing Nanny Plum from Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom… it’s a strange thing: I was reading my son a book. I tried again, thinking about what I was doing and it didn’t work so well…so I tried again and just thought about the character in my head and it was really quite amazing…. I think there must be some weird brain connection thing going on…between hearing something and being able to imitate that I think it must happen unconsciously…I’d be interested to know more about this. nebule, i know what you mean. I just ‘feel’ the character and his mannerisms just flow out of me. however when I conciously try to imitate, its a forlorn job .
