Are there any other fans of the late, lamented Sci-Fi series "Firefly" hanging around the Flutherverse here?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) March 7th, 2011 from iPhone

Did you know that theyre starting to re-run it on the Science Channel?

And, no, I don’t mean the Sci-Fi Channel (which is pretty much filled with mostly useless schlock since the new penny-pinching regime took over and canceled Farscape several years ago.)

But channel #258 (The Science Channel) has apparently seen the light.

It may be a different number on other systems (we have ATT) but if The Science Channel is part of your cable package, Firefly fans are in luck.

I discovered this quite by happy accident and the first three episodes are scheduled to air between 3–5 AM on Tues 3/8 EST. (or as those of us who are of the night-owl species would call it “later on tonight”)

Subsequent episodes are on the schedule for the future so I’m assuming that means the whole rest of the series. Yippee! Not sure about the subsequent movie.

So, is anyone else happy about this?

Firefly fans, declare yourselves! Describe what you liked best about this series and why you think it was supremely stupid of Fox to cancel it before it had sufficient time to build its audience. I’m not the only Flutherite to appreciate this unique show, am I ? A Sci-Fi show with no latex masked Aliens—imagine that.

I never watched Firefly during its run on TV, but I caught it afterwards and watched the whole season in one go. I was shocked that anyone cancelled it, really. Genuinely shocked.

I’m not that excited about it being on the Science Channel because I have all the seasons and the movie on DVD/Blu Ray.

If you’re feeling altruistic, you can help Nathan Fillion buy Firefly. Whenever they get their act together and decide how to do it, since Mr Fillion said not to send money to a web site.

I thought I heard that they were going to start filming again too!

No, no filming in the works, sadly, unless you know something I don’t.
Yes, huge Firefly fan here. I even bought the latest graphic novel telling why Book is the way he is, and no I’m not going to spill the beans!

We can dream can’t we? Hubby and I just discovered it a few months ago and have already watched the whole thing.

@judi

You may have read an item describing the filming of the follow-up movie fairly recently released in theaters “Serenity”

Since it’s still fairly recent, I’m not sure whether they’ll be able to show it at the end or not.

@mrentropy

I hadn’t heard the news about Nathan Fillion. Thanks for that little tidbit. I think it would be great if he did acquire the rights.

Did he say anything further about what he would do if that happens?

Since he’s currently involved in another show (Castle) it would be unlikely he could start filming a follow up series to pick up where it left off.

I’ve tried so hard to get into watching Castle on a regular basis, but the episodes keep piling up on the DVR unwatched.

Not that it’s a bad show, but just doesn’t measure up to the greatness of Firefly :(

I love Firefly. Damn shame it didn’t make it. I’m glad to see the reruns though.

JilltheTooth and I are huge fans of Firefly. We have both the series and the movie and we watch them often. It really sucks that it got canceled. I think it sucks even more that Farscape got canceled. :(

@KatawaGrey Farscape was one of the best scifi series ever. John Chriton was a funny damn character. He was so lost in the first couple episodes.

I miss that show! I wish it hadn’t been canceled. I mean, Serenity was really cool, but Buffy went on for seven seasons. Imagine what cool plotlines Firefly could have gone through in seven seasons.

@KatawaGrey

I feel you on the Farscape cancellation. When I learned that it was cancelled solely because “it was too costly to produce” I was horrified.

Sci-Fi Channel is dead to me. If I could manage it, I’d put a dead roadkill skunk in the bed of the executive who made the decision just to get the message across. (I’d be loathe to waste the head of a perfectly good horse.)

That entire channel has totally gone down the toilet.

I wish there were still a campaign to resurrect Farscape. Somehow I think that if Jim Henson had still been alive, he would have had the imagination and creativity to resurrect it.

Long live Rygel XVI. Long may his helium flatulence prevail !

Firefly is the perfect space western! I fell in love with the show a few years ago. I was lucky enough to watch the show then see Serenity. I watched everything in order and could not be happier! It is one of my favorite shows of all time!

With the talk of them making more episodes, am I the only one who will be a bit sad if they choose to make more episodes? I don’t want to give out any spoilers for those who haven’t seen the movie, but I don’t know how they could make more episodes after what happened in Serenity. Everything ended for me and I am satisfied. I don’t want that to be ruined by them making more episodes.

Love(d) Firefly. I really am hoping someone will be able to purchase the rights and start making more. However I am afraid if they do not get the same cast and writers, it will be a disappointment.

I lurve Firefly!

<sigh> Now I’m due for a full Firefly and Farscape re-viewing!
I watch Castle and Nathan Fillion’s character occasionally makes oblique references to Firefly. I feel special when he does that… :-)

I got the DVDs.

Still waiting for season 2.

Yeah. That’s going to be a real long wait :)

I know. Trying to be patient.
