Whats a good AFFORDABLE camcorder for beauty tutorials?

Asked by ashleyvvv (104points) March 18th, 2011

So I have a beauty YouTube channel and I would really love to get a camcorder that shows the colors up close and everything, I would also like the screen to do a 360 so I can see what I’m doing. But it needs to be somewhere around 100–200 dollars. (I do hair & makeup tutorials) Help?!

You can’t really go wrong with a Sony or a Panasonic. These are both excellent companies with affordable cameras. If you want to be able to do a 360, you’ll need a tripod. With a smaller camera, you wouldn’t need a big tripod. Smaller, aluminum tripods are not expensive at all and will also help with a steady shot. In order to have your colors true to life, you will need to follow instructions for white balancing your shot. Do not skip the white balancing. Whenever you see a video where things look too green, blue, yellow or red, it’s because someone didn’t white balance.

@KatawaGrey so do you have any specific ones in mind?
and call me a noob but “white balance”...whaaa?

@ashleyvvv White balancing is balancing the color of the shot. Sunlight, incandescent, fluorescent, etc. all have different levels of color. White balancing changes the levels of different colors. Most cameras have automatic white balancing, but @KatawaGrey is correct in that white balancing can get screwed up sometimes.

@Rarebear explained white balancing pretty well. However, I would suggest you not use the automatic white balancing settings since those can still be a little off depending on your settings. Usually, all you need is a white piece of paper and a button on the camera that you press and hold for around five seconds or so and then your shot will be white balanced but it’s important to follow the specific instructions for your camera. I only mentioned it because if you are doing makeup tutorials, color can be very important.

I don’t know about specific models since I haven’t used most cameras and the ones I have the most experience with are the really nice cameras we have at my school that cost thousands of dollars but the best thing you could do would be to go to an electronics store and scope out some cameras in your price range. If you find something you really like but that is too expensive for you, you can probably find it on amazon or in another store for cheaper.

@KatawaGrey The issue is that she has a $200 price limit. She’s not going to get a lot at that price range, which is why I suggested the flip cam.
