What is "emo"?

Asked by susanc (16144points) April 20th, 2008

peedub said it in his answer to “what is indie” and I don’t know
what it is because I am old.

emo = being overly emotional about something.

example:
sorry but i’m being emo right now
response to being over dramatic about something.

Emo: Short for Emotional…....a sub-genre of Rock that is quite popular with the kids these days. Wiki has a page on it.

The music is great, but the whole thing is just a bit sad..

susanc's avatar

Cutters? are you talking about kids who cut themselves? Do you think of them
as drama queens? Aiee. Please say more.

Alina1235's avatar

yeah my step kids call them cutters and emos. They r about to start high school and apparently emos in their school cut themselves and way way waaaaaay over emotional but not in a good way. The music they listen to, their thoughts…. Just way out there

where is peedub when I am waiting for him to finish crafting his response to my urgent question.

As wildflower has stated, it is short for Emotional. Much like the term ‘indie,’ the meaning and usage has seen some transformation over the last couple decades. It used to describe a type of music, that of more ‘emotional’- sounding hardcore, or hardcore punk music that was a bit more melodic, with whinier vocals.
Back in the day people were more likely to use the word in the context of describing a band or the band’s sound. On other occasions I remember hearing the term applied derisively, as in, “quit being so emo, etc.

Today it seems to have evolved into a sort of mainstream image, complete with it’s own dress code and code of mopey behavior.

hey pee, I feel really dumb right now but has indie music generated from that?

peedub's avatar

No. Did you check out the question about ‘Indie?’

Alina1235's avatar

of course not LOL

I used to cut myself, but wasn’t “emo”... I was depressed, and needed help for my condition. Being “emo” is more of a fashion these days, and listening to sad music. Please, someone that cuts themself or what you said a “cutter” is not emo- they’re sick and need help! Just like I did back in the day…

peedub's avatar

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I hope cutting isn’t somehow cool with kids these days

TheHaight's avatar

I hope it isn’t cool, either, and I hope it never will be. I hope alina(and all mothers) are letting her children know that its depression, and a condition were they need help. Calling it “emo” or “cutters” makes it sound like its nothing and that really irritates me.

wildflower's avatar

cutting is such a general term…...I remember being in school and using a compass to carve initials in to my skin (thankfully the only ones still visible are my own). There’s a big difference between suicidal kids and emo “cutters” who aren’t trying to kill themselves as much as make a statement about the numbness of life in general.

TheHaight's avatar

its ALL the same to me.
that whole numbness in life, everyone goes through. And people that purposely self inflict pain, just isn’t healthy at all.
Perhaps your views are different on it then
mine. I carved me initials too, into my wrist, and now I know I was making a “statement” that I needed help. People that cut don’t really do it to kill themselves, they just want to feel that pain and just don’t know how to handle it the healthy way.

TheHaight's avatar

stupid phone left lots of weird spaces!!!^^

peedub's avatar

I like these cutters.

wildflower's avatar

you’re grand, I got the point…..
you’re right, everyone goes through the ‘everything sucks’ phase, but there’s different ways of handling it. Some get angry, some get sad, some escape reality, some do drugs, some hurt themselves…..it’s all acting out in some way. Thankfully most get through the phase OK.

TheHaight's avatar

Agreed ;)
just seems like these days kids are way more fucked up.. Due to a lot of reasons.
Thankfully, I got through the phase and hope everyone else is around the world.

Peedub: ive never seen that movie! But those cutters look “hip” ;)

peedub's avatar

Someone is going to slap me but I have to do this.

wildflower's avatar

LOL….I want one!

khorenmanouk's avatar

Short for Emotional. Its like every generation had something. (mod, punk, grundge) so now its the Emo movement.

wildflower's avatar

A great example of Emo music is this video…..the theme (as best I can figure) is Emo-Ninja’s.
– Great song though.

those emo kids are still a mistery to me, what’s the fun in acting sad? but hey, i don’t realy get kids anyway, i mean, fallout boy, why? i guess it’s just because teenagers are…dumb asses in general

iwamoto's avatar

hey that’s a good one, what are those parents thinking? well, maybe that’s why they write “my parents don’t get me” in their poems

Babo's avatar

wildflower's avatar
