Should I focus on school or play a sport?

Asked by Harrow185 (298points) May 20th, 2011

I’m a senior in high school next year, the most important thing is getting myself in to college, of course. But I’ve also enrolled myself in other extracurricular activities since my freshman year. I’ve been playing division 2 field hockey, we’ve won the state championship every year, so as you can tell it’s a huge commitment, and a lot of work. I’ve come to the argument with myself where I don’t know if I should play or not next year. I’m not the star player, and I don’t really enjoy the sport all that much. I was thinking of getting a job, so I could save up some money and get new hockey equipment instead of running and getting in shape all summer for field hockey. My grades also aren’t eye catching, they’re average, without field hockey I would be able to focus on them a lot more. But with field hockey, I would be able to get into a pretty decent college with some sort of scholarship. I can’t decide what I want to do, so I figured other opinions would help me out. Thank you for your time! :)

Why not both?

Sorry if this answer is too simplistic… but if you’re not even enjoying the hockey then why bother with it?

It seems to me that college applications will have to be in before your fall grades are posted. So you are going to be judged by your grades up to now. Is this correct?

Anyway, if your fall semester grades don’t count, then bringing them up won’t help you. Field hockey may make you application look better than your grades, I guess. It might even get you a scholarship. I guess I wouldn’t make any drastic changes.

If you could get a field hockey scholarship (if you are good enough) then I would continue playing.

I think that you should finish the sports year, but also worry about school, too. Challenge yourself to hit a doublewhammy.

If you are not enjoying the hockey then quit! that´s the simplest thing to do.
Then find a summer job and focus on school. I think it makes more sense that way.

Focus on school. Education gets you more opportunities than a sport.

Just do what you want. College degrees are having less and less value lately, in terms of both life skills and employment.

If you want to keep playing in college (it doesn’t sound like you do) then keep playing, but if not, focus on your grades. 4 years really isn’t going to be much different then 3 unless you really step it up and get some serious awards for your fourth year of field hockey.

Do what you can realistically handle. Can you handle attending all the practices, doing the homework, studying, and getting extra help if you have to?

1. Play a sport that you enjoy playing whether it’s for the sport itself or the people in it. I run track and cross country because I’ve become friends with the people who run track and cross country plus I enjoy getting better at running and staying in shape.

2. You need to balance them out. Don’t just chose sports. If you think you are incapable, then still give it a try. You will need to sacrifice some free time though. If you are definitely incapable and need to focus on school, then school is the right way to go. You need to balance your priorities. You usually won’t have to stay after that long either. Depends how much homework you have. I only get 2 hours of homework tops and I get home from track at 4:00. I can easily balance sports, school, and social life.

3. Make school a priority. You can exercise in your free time if you can’t do sports. Sports aren’t for everyone, but it’s a great opportunity to have some fun, make some friends, and do something other than sit around in your house on the computer all day (which is what I do).

First of all you should be gain School a priority after that you can improve your sport level if you will fail in sport level then best using school a priority in your future.
