If a singer is diagnosed with emphysema, will her singing be affected?

I heard yesterday that Whitney Houston was diagnosed with emphysema. I did not put Whitney Houston in the question because I don’t want the question specifically about her, her drug use, failures, etc. Just in general, if a singer is diagnosed with emphysema, can she sing with the passion and gusto she had prior to the emphysema?
