Did I get a dud PS3, or is just a dud T.V.?

Asked by ShanEnri (4424points) July 14th, 2011

I bought a PS3 from someone in my family that needed the money. When I hook it up to my tv, I get sound but no picture. I have tried 2 different tv’s but I get the same result. My tv’s are old standard tv’s and I think she had it hooked up to a high def tv, so I tried the reset where you hold the power button down until it beeps twice and there is no change. We have actually gotten a picture a couple of times but then it froze up, so I don’t know if it’s my tv or the ps3?!

It sounds to me like the video cable isn’t the correct one for your TV.

We’ve tried the cables that came with the ps3 and the one that connected my ps2 and neither one works!

Do you have a newer computer monitor?

Most of the flat screen ones would be able to use the HD hook ups that should be with the PS3.

A stock PS3 out of the box comes with your old fashion cables (the red, white, yellow stereo/video ones) and a set of HD cables (various colors, i’m not terribly familiar with them). If both sets fail to work then something is probably up with the PS3.

I got it to work but now it overheats and freezes up…I guess I should just get my money back huh?!

I would get a refund and use it to purchase an xbox 360.

they addressed their heat sink problems and LIVE has never been shut down by hackers like PSN was.

The ps2 wires won’t work. Try hooking it up to someone’s hd tv to see if it works. If it does change the settings to the ones for a tube set. 480 I believe. You will still need the correct wires. You need rca connections for a tube set or non hd. The component won’t work.

@Blondesjon Too many kids on xbox live for me. It was the first problem sony had and the ps3 is a superior machine. Plus you have to pay to play online. I don’t know about now but there also used to be a lot of cheaters on xbox live. Hacked their machines or saves or whatever they did. Don’t have that on psn at all.

@Blondesjon Yah, they just have a problem with overheating and melting the internal soldering, thats all. lol

It does sound like you got a dude though if its freezing up. Is it a particular game thats freezing up? If so it could just be that game.
