Is there a pain patch that works in a localized area only?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) October 3rd, 2011

Many years ago, I broke my right toe, in fact nearly severed it from my foot. A very heavy piece of steel I was moving fell on it, and the flanged end cut nearly through it. I was in Corfu, Greece at the time and am not sure I get the best of medical care setting the bone. It now aches constantly. Doc says there is just some localized arthritis that’s settled into the damaged joint in it.

So is there some sort of pain patch you can put in one spot that doesn’t affect your whole body but treats the pain in that one area? I don’t want to take heavy-duty painkillers to knock this pain down. I know from experience with an abscessed tooth that even taking two 10/350 Vicodins (that’s 20mg of hydrocodone!) doesn’t stop the danged thing from hurting.

I wonder if a Lidocain patch would help. It worked well for the pain between my shoulderblades before I started yoga.

I use a lidocaine patch on my foot (screwed up after surgery wherein they nicked 3 different nerves) and it REALLY helps! These are available by prescription only but they are huge and you can cut them down to the size you really need for the affected area. I couldn’t survive without lidocaine patches!

The other thing I do for pain is kinesiology tape which I purchase here. You have to have a physical therapist show you how to tape for your specific issue, but this stuff is flat out amazing. I have been able to reduce the amount of oral medication I take just by taping with kinesiotape. It has truly changed my life (I gained over 50 pounds due to severe limitations in physical activity until I tried this freakin’ tape).

No offense, but I think those patches suck!

Kayak8's avatar

@GabrielsLamb Does that mean that you have tried them? For what type of pain?

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@Kayak8 For shoulder pain.

@Judi & @Kayak8 Thanks. @GabrielsLamb I appreciate the second opinion. Not all solutions work for everyone. What you are telling me is to sample the solution and see if it works for me before sinking a bunch of bucks in a stockpile of it.

@ETpro Wow… You guys are really good at figuring out what I want to say as opposed to the way it sometimes comes out. That’s special to me… *sniff.

Yes… That is exactly what I mean to say. *Smiles.
