Is it normal to be this sick?

Asked by Keep_on_running (6759points) December 29th, 2011

I’m still recovering after a night of illness, I vomited six times and had the chills and muscle spasms in my legs and stomach which were unbearable. I felt like I was going to die. I couldn’t stop whining and vocalizing my pain like a child, even my family were freaked out by my moaning.

Anyway…it only lasted 12 hours or so until I started to feel better. But what could cause such intense, yet short, sickness? Is it more likely to be food poisoning or a stomach flu? Have you ever had such a severe reaction like this before?

I had the ‘stomach flu’ a few years ago where I was throwing up hourly… and I shit my pants. More than once. It was probably the most miserable I’ve ever been. I think I felt worse for my husband, who had to take care of me, than I did for myself. That stuff is the pits.

If you’re feeling better now, that is a good sign. Rehydrate, rehydrate, rehydrate. Don’t drown yourself in liquids, sip slowly and don’t try to consume too much at once, but really focus on getting your fluids in. Diluted Gatorade or fruit juice, ginger ale, broth, plain water is okay if you can stomach it.

I had food poisoning once. I seriously wanted to die. I was so, so ill. @ANef_is_Enuf is right, water. Rehydrate your body. Might even be worth getting those sports drinks with the electrolytes.

Did it come on about four hours or so after eating? If so, it could be food poisoning. Otherwise, possibly a bug.

@ANef_is_Enuf It’s the worst pain isn’t it? I just couldn’t handle it. But I’ve been drinking all day now and feel much better.

@Bellatrix Yeah, I woke up a 4:00 am with this sudden nausea (about 6 hours after eating) so it could’ve been the food. I’ll keep on drinking and start to eat some food later.

Glad you’re feeling better, then. Sorry that it was such a brutal round, but fortunately it wasn’t long lived. Get lots of rest. :)

Quite likely to be food poisoning. It actually takes a few hours to come on apparently. I hope you are feeling better. Rest up. Drink. Let your body recover.

That is a perfect example of food poisoning. Did you talk with anyone else who ate the same food? They could use the drink water advice.

‘Stomach flu’ is nearly always food poisoning. It’s awful, isn’t it? Ick.

@augustlan The proof it is flu is when the next person in the house catches it 12–24 hours later hahaha. Ew.

@Keep_on_running It does sound like food poisoning most likely. Did you have chicken, or some other poultry? Raw eggs?

It could be either food poisoning or a virus. In any case, the symptoms that you describe are typical.

It’s maybe due to food poisoning.
