What is feature-based security (as opposed to role-based) in computer databases?

I have a basic understanding of role-based security for databases, but am trying to figure out the key features of feature-based security.

It is software to keep lesser trusted persons out of a deeper loop.
Kind of a’ need to know’ hierarchy.

But do you know on what basis security is assigned in a feature-based system? In role-based, anyone with a certain position assignment gets access to everything their position type has access to. I’m not sure how access is assigned in the feature-based systems.
