AMD Radeon HD 6970 in an hp xw8200 workstation?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) March 8th, 2012

I am wondering if the AMD Radeon HD 6970 is compatible, and would work in an hp xs8200’s motherboard. Surely this computer can support this newer video card.

I would be careful. While according to this, the board should accept the card, your power supply might not.
Modern graphic cards need up to 2 extra power supply cables, which your old PSU might not have.
And also, a friend of mine had an HP PC once. Tried to install one of my old graphic cards in it, and while the board itself had the proper slot, it did not fit into the case. It seems they intentionally build their systems in a way to prevent upgrades and to force your to buy an entirely new system.

@ragingloli Yeah, the PCI holder is probably going to be a problem since it has a spring arm to hold the card in place, but I have a dremel tool XD The vid card should fit there is plenty of room, and I have adapters from IDE power to the 6 pi connectors so that’s good. I was just worried the card might not work in that board.

It was not a matter of enough space. The case was built in such a way that any non hp card was too long to fit inside.
Imagine a house with electrical sockets where only appliances made by the house’s manufacturer had fitting plugs.

@ragingloli That’s what I mean, length wise there is plenty of room.

I do not mean to the inside, i mean to the outside. If I had been able to put the card into the socket, the end where the monitor cable would go, would have been 1 cm outside the case.

@ragingloli ahh, wierd.

Well, I have another card witht he same size basically, so I’ll test that out first.
