Why do Benedryls make me feel rotten if taken two in a row?

Asked by Aster (20023points) March 9th, 2012

If I take a Benedryl at bedtime I sleep great. But if I try to follow up by taking one the next night I feel nervous , can’t sleep well and feel rotten the next day. Why?

ONE Benedryl is over drugging @gailcalled ? It says to take two on the label.

Read about the possible side effects on the label and the advice to call your doctor if you have any symptoms that cause you concern.

(Benadryl)

I have taken two at nightime for years with no adverse reactions.

Take two with some milk. It helps.

@john65pennington: Would your height and weight buffer you? If I recall, you are a big guy.

Benadryl has different reactions for different people. For both my husband and I that can mean drowsiness, or hyper-activity (yes, you can have the opposite reaction).

If you need something to help you sleep on a regular basis and you are having a nervous reaction, this is not the drug for you.

We might also want to remember that when taking any medication, that have antihistamine reactions, there is going to be a certain amount of dehydration. Your mucous membranes will dry to a certain extent. It is important to hydrate when using Benadryl or any of the related generics. It’s important to hydrate, anyway. Oh, and drinking caffeine based beverages only dehydrate you further.

Ugh, I wish I knew. I made that mistake once and it felt like I got ran over by a freight train.

Look on the bottle. Does it contain acetaminophen? An overdose of acetaminophen, even just a slight overdose, can be quite unpleasant. I’m surprised that products using it as an active ingredient are available over-the-counter.

Well, if I take it one night I feel fine the following day. But if I take it again the next night I suffer. Not horribly but it’s not worth it.

Two different nights should be plenty of time between doses. Try a different brand (with the same advice concerning acetaminophen).
