In Massachusetts how old do you have to be to move out?

Asked by bluejay (1014points) March 31st, 2012

My friend is thinking about moving out and wants to know how soon he can. I heard somewhere that when you’re 17 and six months you’re all set to go without emancipation. Is this correct?

It’s probably 18. I’m sure someone couldn’t be on a lease until 18 since at 17 you’re still considered a minor and can’t sign contracts. He might want to wait until he’s 18 so he can be more independent .. if that’s what he wants.

Here is information about the laws pertaining to emancipation of a minor. both formal and informal solutions, in MA.

@gailcalled well yeah he could do it himself, but I briskly mentioned it to him and don’t know if looking it up even entered his mind. He probably took it as fact. Thanks for the links. They have good information.
