Why does my shoulder still hurt?

Asked by twiggles90 (85points) September 7th, 2012

5 Months ago I was in car crash. I went to PT and was released and go an x-ray done no problems with my bones. But it still hurts to fully put my arm above my head. I went to the chiropractor and he popped the bones in the back into alignment and now it hurts even more… Any idea why or what could be wrong?

Pinched nerve?

You may have torn a ligament around your shoulder. Torn ligaments don’t show up on x-rays.
I wouldn’t go back to the Chiropractor. I would wait a few weeks and rest the arm, do light stretching and mobility exercises and see your doctor again.

You could have a disk problem in your neck which can cause pain in your shoulder. A GP would likely not know that. Have you seen an orthapedic surgeon? Did the doctors you have seen do xrays of your neck? It also may be simply the muscles and tendons for the shoulder; the rorator cuff. It can take months for something like that to get back to nornal. I have the same problem right now from an accident. I can fully rotate my left arm slowly, but it is painful above my head. If I do it quickly it can be pretty bad, I try to avoid that for now because the pain stays for a while.

its been 5 months since the accident. no since my neck got better then didn’t x-ray that. I’m waiting on an appointment with a orthopedic doc

@twiggles90 Let us know what the orthopedic doc says. Did you ever have very bad pain at the back of the shoulder, more down where the birdie/angel bone is? That also is typically neck related. But, I think it is most likely the muscles and tendons in your shoulder. Have you been lifting heavy things? You need to not strain the muscle, while also being sure to use it in it’s full range. You said you had PT, so I guess they did exercises with you for that. I’m frustrated with my situation too, so I empathesize. But, what keeps me thinking it will be alright is I had a back injury many years ago and it took 9 months to get better. 9 long painful aggravating months. But, it did get better, all better. I think what finally did the trick was I went to live with my MIL and she did all the chores. She did all my laundry, all the cooking, and all the cleaning. But, the back problen was all muscular. With my new neck and shoulder how I prefer to sleep makes my shoulder hurt, it sucks. So, every night I think I aggravate the area.

I work at costco. so i try to avoid heavy stuff as much as i can, but only so much I can do to avoid it. I get pain in the back muscle, top and front. So the whole shoulder hurts

@twiggles90 Didn’t your first doctor give you a prescription for work not to lift more than 10 pounds?

no. i was fully released, but i mostly fold cloths so it normally easy to avoid heavy stuff. I have an appointment tmr morning with a doctor that specializes in shoulders

I am going through the exact same thing. I had an MRI done, and they saw some tearing, but said it was better to wait for the area to be desensitized than to go in and try and fix it. Fuckers.
It feels like my arm is ripping apart when I make some motions.
The orthopedist gave me 2 cortisone shots, but I really need a third in a deeper spot. I will probably go back to the orthopedist after doing more rehab.
