Is racism a factor in the 2012 US Presidential election?

The Associated Press studied attitudes about race in polls in 2008 and again this year. (link to AP) It found that racism had increased over the last 4 years.
General Colin Powell’s former chief of staff Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson stated the Republican’s are plainly racist. (link to Washington Post)
Evidently, racism is alive and well in the US in the 21st century.
