How do I become a coach?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) June 12th, 2008

I have long thought about coaching basketball, but I don’t know where to start. Can I go to school for this? Any ideas?

Do you mean at the mid/high school level? I think it might just be a matter of finding out what school needs a coach. That’s my impression from a teacher friend of mine who coaches.

I just started coaching Ultimate frisbee in my local HS this year. It’s a little different though – I just showed up and they were able to use me right away as an assistant coach. Most other sports would be a little more formal, I imagine. You might find a similar kind of openness for basketball, but you may have to start young to find those kind of openings. Good luck!

Volunteer! Go online and get the phone numbers for local basketball tournaments and leagues. Look at the YMCA in your area or any youth centers. AAU teams and Boy’s Clubs are a good place to start too. You could always call your local area schools as well, but if they don’t have any openings or have requirements that you don’t qualify for (such as a teaching certificate- my high school required that all coaches also teach at least one class) then you don’t have to just wait around- you could gain valuable experience with some of the other types of organizations I mentioned.
