What are your thoughts about Christopher McCandless (see details)?

Asked by wildpotato (15224points) September 14th, 2013 from iPhone

Turns out the guy from Into the Wild might not have been quite so responsible for his own demise as was previously thought. New information has been presented about how he likely died, and it has a lot to do with my namesake: article.

@wildpotato I considered sending this story to you because of your username! It actually prompted me to rewatch the film this week. I think the new theory is very plausible, and I’m glad this detective work was done for the sake of others who might try to live off the stuff.

New information is always to be taken into acct. regardless, I admired him, and, I was a female who did something similar at age 17.
I graduated early, moved as a caretaker, to a remote, 200 acre property on a lake in the Sierra Nevadas here. I lived alone in a tiny cabin with 2 dogs, 4 cats and a horse, my only source of transportation being 16 miles from a campground that had the only phone in the zone. This was in 1977, no cell phones then, obviously.

I grew a garden, went to the city once a month for other supplies, and drank from an underground spring with a pump that eventually crapped out and left me with no water. lol
I would ride my horse several miles down the lake every evening at sunset and the rangers would do a drive by boat check to make sure I was okay.
I dealt with rattlesnakes everywhere, ( it was a drought year and they were all around the lake edge in the rocks ), never got bitten.
I ran off wilderness campers with a rifle on horseback when they would boat in and make campfires that threatened my safety.

I was quite the little adventuress, all by myself in the middle of nowhere.
My family thought I was insane, boys were turned on beyond words, and in awe of my spirited ways.
I once came galloping down to the lake, bareback, in shorts, bikini top and moccasins and fired off my 22 rifle to get the attenton of several guys camping with a fire on my property.
I think they thought cute little me, all wild and tanned with blonde pigtails flying was an easy mark to be disregarded. heh…you should have seen how fast they scrambled into their boat when I fired my rifle. lol

Good old days, and anyone that has an adventurious spirit is my kinda person.

Interesting new information. I hope word gets out among the foragers, and that you aren’t eating them yourself, @wildpotato!

“Grizzly Man” is in my DVD library. A keeper.
I loved Timothy Treadwell. He may have gotten a bit lackadaisical in his dealings with the bears, but he was a unique and humorous and passionate guy.

It takes a lot of courage to go where most men/women will never venture.
I will say as an animal/nature nut though, that he did project a little too much human emotion on some very big predators. Never the less, his conservation work and care cannot be discredited.

I thought it was an interesting update on how he died. The whole story is alternately inspiring and alternately sad. If the seeds hadn’t led to his demise, I am sure something else would have. He was getting close to malnourished.

@Coloma I never understood why people called McCandless an irresponsible fool, but I absolutely think that about Treadwell. He was nuts, and what happened to him was inevitable. It’s a shame that the bear that killed him had to pay with his life.

Never heard of the guy.

@glacial Trueish…he was a nut, no doubt, but I think his original good intentions got lost in ego. Still, I enjoyed his offbeat personality inspite of his shortcomings.

@Coloma My favourite thing about that film was Werner Herzog’s voiceovers. Of course, he has a way of exposing the imminent doom in just about any story.

@glacial Haha…yes, he is a great narrator.
