Would it be semantically correct for me to say I went to the ocean if I'm referring to the Gulf of Mexico?

Wikipedia says, “The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world. Considered a smaller part of the Atlantic Ocean, it is an ocean basin largely surrounded by the North American continent and the island of Cuba.”
But that doesn’t quite clear it up for me. What do you think?
