Re. The Interview, why blame Sony but not AMC and the other major theatres for caving in?

Asked by flo (13313points) December 28th, 2014

Not to say they were right or wrong, but the President and others blamed Sony for caving in. Considering that it is the theatres who declared they wouldn’t play it, which led Sony to cancel it why did they get off the hook?

Sony could have come right out and said they were going to stream it online or do what they did and release it to independent theaters. But, in defense of them, they were in a difficult position when their initial decision was made—it wasn’t unreasonable at the time.

I don’t blame Sony for anything. I blame the “news” media for their hyper-sensationalism of a truly mundane story.

I though it has been released after all? Maybe I heard wrong.

I think the premise for the movie is terrible. A movie making fun of killing it’s President/PM/Dictator? I don’t see that as funny. What’s next? A movie about Arabs disguised as KKK and planning to kill Obama? It’s not funny.

Sony’s job was to get the film into theaters, or to find a way for people to see it. They chickened out at the first threat.
I think they were more afraid of worse emails being revealed than the stated threat of 9–11 style attacks on movie theaters.

@filmfann I don’t think Sony believes that the hacking was done by North Korea at all. That theory seems to have fallen out of favour very quickly, even though your president has used it to rattle the sabre a litte. It makes the Republicans feel good, and at practically no risk, since North Korea is utterly inept.

Has any public figure blamed the major theatres though?

I have a feeling focus groups said they wouldn’t go to see the movie and the plan all along was to release it online. The controversy might have all been concocted. I’m in a conspiracy theory non-trusting mood right now.

@JLeslie I doubt it. Something this big would be hard to keep secret. The simplest explanation (that they chickened out) is the best one in this case.
