So, did you have any interesting trick or treaters last night?

My favorite all-time trick or treat story happened about 8 years ago. My house was full of my little grandkids in costume who were getting ready to go out.
A little girl, around their age, maybe 5, knocked on the door.
I opened the door, she saw that there was a party going and she just walked right past me into it!
I stepped aside, laughing and said, “Well alrighty then!”
Then I turned back to Mom and said, smiling, “Would you like to come in?”
She. Was. Horrified. Her eyes wide with what looked like terror, she shook her head mutely and, from the doorway, started whispering the kid’s name as loud as she could for whispering.
“Missy! Missy!! Come here!”
She was about to lose it, so I stepped over to Missy, who had been instantly accepted as part of the group, and said, “Missy, you need to go back to your mother.”
Her face fell, and she went back.
Weird. I don’t know what Mom thought we were going to do to the kid. Dismantle her and hand out kid parts to the trick or treaters I guess.

Last night all the kids got a kick out of our white German Shepherd, who was wearing a tie, and who had to check out each kid. I told the kids that she was dressed up like a wolf. A wolf with a tie. They liked that.

Only one sour note. This one kid, a little older, maybe 10, sauntered up with a tootsie pop stuck in his cheek, the stick sticking out of his mouth, and muttered “Trick or treat.” I can’t even remember if he had on a costume or not.
When I held the bowl of assorted candy out to him he set his bag down and started to use both hands to scoop up as much as he could, which would have been pretty much the whole bowl.
I shut it down instantly, and he got ONE piece of candy.

The rest of them were sweet. If they politely asked if they could have more than one I’d pretend to think about it, then say, “OK. You can have 3. But you have to say ‘thank you’ three times!”
They got a kick out of that.
