Google Photos/Cloud users, can you help me out?

Asked by CunningFox (1397points) November 21st, 2015

This thing has kinda got me confused…haha.
Been looking for ways to clear up storage space on my phone. I just got Google Photos and basically I’m wondering how I can delete the photos from the gallery on my phone and still have them saved in Google Photos.
That’s the short version of my question. Let me know if you need more details. Thanks.

I find it confusing, too. A while ago I looked for an answer but I still don’t know.

1)
This link says “With back up & sync turned on, you can delete local copies from your mobile device but keep cloud copies saved in your Google Photos library.”

2)
HOWEVER, on that page, I clicked on Backup & Sync – How does sync work and it says, “Changes you make to your photos, like editing and deleting, will happen on every device that syncs to your Google Photos library.”

Google doesn’t give a straight answer, so I keep Google backup & sync turned off.

Instead I let Dropbox on my phone and computer copy my phone pictures. After the computer grabs the pics from the phone, they are safe, and I delete them from my phone.

1. Go to menu icon on the top left corner and open Device folders
2. Touch and hold the photos you want to delete
3. Tap on the Delete device copy option on top right corner

@clairedanajames Been trying that too. When I do it says I will be deleting a photo that is not backed up….I thought I already backed up my photos?! Lol. This is a headache. I’m in a Google forum about it right now but they keep telling me the same things.

@CunningFox I’m not sure what caused that, but the above steps did help me. I think you save your photos to some other cloud service, if Google Photos isn’t helping.
