What is an anglophobe? Is it someone who is afraid to speak English?

Asked by BMOMans (20points) May 8th, 2016

My Finnish neighbors are still afraid of speaking English. They prefer French, but I will ask about what a francophile is in a separate question.

Is being afraid of the English language make you an anglophobe? Or is it just being afraid of the United Kingdom and Britainization?

Goodness, it means just the opposite.

@Pachy He is asking about phobes, not philes.

Being “afraid” of a language does not make one phobic about a culture. English is a very difficult language to master because it has evolved from so many influences. Most Americans get confused over British-English, that doesn’t make us Anglophobes.

Oops, sorry—I read the question too fast on an iPhone screen too small.

I think it means a dislike for England and English culture. I have not come across a word for a fear of learning English or indeed fear of learning a language in general

No, an Anglophile is someone who immerses themselves in English lore and enjoys learning about the English.

From the Wiki :“Anti-English sentiment or Anglophobia means opposition to, dislike of, fear of, or hatred towards England or the English people.”
