What has happened to the highlight feature in my Win10 program? (details inside)

Asked by rojo (24179points) May 19th, 2017

Over the past few days I have noticed an annoying glitch with my highlight feature. Some times it will just stop in mid process and refuse to highlight the passage I want highlighted. Sometimes it will flip from the highlighted portion and highlight a different but contiguous section. Sometimes it will highlight but then immediately disappear when I release the mouse button. Sometimes it will only function if I start at the end of the section and move back toward the beginning of the part I want to highlight.
This is true regardless of whether I am using the function in word, or Adobe or online. No other problems with the computer that I have noted.

Anyone have any ideas why?

Is it a laptop? Trackpad issues come to find, but could also be the mouse.

It sounds basic, but is everything updated and restarted recently?

Official IT Rx – update, restart, and try another mouse. If it’s still the same, look for mouse or trackpad driver updates with the manufacturer.

No, it is a desktop but your question makes me wonder if it could actually be a mouse problem.

It is a fairly new computer, only about 2 years old (I know, I know, that is, like 18 in computer years). Pretty well up to date, the only things that look to be outstanding are one update for Adobe Air and one for Glary Utilities. I will get to them this afternoon.

Also, both the mouse and keyboard are wired.
