What kind of squirrel tastes best in a Mulligan stew: grey, red, white, or chipmunk?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) February 16th, 2019

They all live in my area.

At Christmas we roast chipmunks on an open fire, like in the song. But I’ve heard of Mulligan Stew with squirrel meat as a fairly staple item in some rural areas. Squirrels are plentiful in my area and to me seem like a very accessible source of meat.

Grey squirrels and chipmunks are very plentiful, but there are red ones in the woods not too far away. White squirrels may be endangered or protected.

I’ve heard Squirrel tastes like rabbit meat. That’s all Iknow.

Roasting chipmunks has been illegal in England since the 16th century which is when people began roasting chestnuts, a poor substitute as far as taste is concerned, or so they said at the time.

I guess they changed the lyrics to the song then.

Thanks for the info. This is useful.
