What do you waste your time doing, and at what point does "just taking a break" become an actual waste of time?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) August 21st, 2019

I once read, “The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”

But the truth is, for probably half of us, we often waste time, even if we enjoy it, doing things that do not move us towards any real goals, productivity, time, hobbies, or even interests.

I spend a lot of time daydreaming, even though I have real goals that I am not meeting, that would be far more satisfactory. I once was a writer, but when I sit down to write, I get distracted by the internet, all the information, even writing on Fluther.

Sometimes, between showering and getting dressed, I take a little break and think about things or daydream or even drift back to sleep—and before I know it, forty minutes have passed and I am very late.

I am not taking about hobbies, which involve dedication and yield results. I’m talking about when a vacant day is closing and you haven’t accomplished a thing.

Maybe nobody wants to admit it if they waste a lot of time on trivial things or even engagements like Fluther. But for those of us who do, its hard to avoid distractions and periods of non-productivity.

The term, “waste of time,” in my opinion, is a misnomer, possibly thought up by some guy’s wife or boss, who thought he needed to get up and do something.

I waste far to much time here on Fluther. Utterly non-productive.

I never think I am wasting my time. I think that is a judgment made by other people.

Something I’ve learned from my support group for parents of transgender children is to not waste time with haters and trolls on the internet. When my son first came out I would often spend time reading comments online and I would defend the trans community. It put my well being in a terrible state. My support group helped me realize it’s not worth my time or my sanity.

I still occasionally voice my opinion but I know when to step away. I don’t waste hours.

I enjoy wasting time playing with my cats.

Designing something that doesn’t exist knowing that I’ll leave it on the drawing board.

It is too subjective a designation, “waste time”. “Daydreaming” may equal “recharging”. I don’t agree that a “period of non-productivity” may be seen as a “waste” to some, but only if they are wedded to the idea of socially mandated productivity.

Most of the things you mentioned are “using time” even when there is no direct advance toward a goal, they provide “life enhancement” opportunities.

The real time wasters are trying to remember where we put our keys, or checkbook, or cell phone. Trying to figure out why we just walked into the kitchen, or family room. Also getting off the freeway at the wrong exit and having to get back on. It is usually a waste of time trying to find a parking place close to the entrance, especially when it’s healthier for you to walk.

No such thing as wasted time. It’s my time. I’ll spend it how I want.

80% of my fluther and facebook is probably a waste of time.

Maybe half of my TV watching.

I don’t consider it a waste of time to relax or to connect with friends, it’s just when it is done to excess, or when I am not getting done things that need to get done it’s not a good things.

Taking a break might include interacting on Fluther. When it comes to arguing with @stanleybmanly it becomes a waste of time.

Facebook is a big time waster for me. I find it enjoyable because it’s mindless. It’s not like reading a book which requires concentration, or doing stuff around the house which yields results which I can see. I love to read books and I need to do more stuff around the house, but Facebook can be a big distraction. I will mix it up with reading the NY Times online and going to Fluther, and looking at other online magazine articles, but I still feel guilty that I should be doing stuff in the house or reading a book.

If I have a whole day off, I won’t spend it on the internet, but I will return to the computer every now and then to check in and kill more time.

You are wasting time when you plan to do something but end up distracting yourself with something else instead.

Youtube, internet, and fluther are it for me.

I think of wasted time activities I should be avoiding since there are so many things around here I should be doing. But instead, due to ongoing fatigue , I do waste hours a day on Netflix , Facebook and Youtube. I am hooked on documentaries on Netflix and the wealth of information available on Youtube.

@Aster : any good documentaries you can recommend?

I’m enjoying the Donald Trump story with his marriages, bankruptcies and divorces. I really like the “Kindness” series too.
