Do you have an interesting custom when giving gifts especially at Christmas?

I had an interesting conversation with an older women the other day who told me that in her day her mother would give three presents to her in this order:
1. A gift from the past ( she gave her her childhood doll).
2. A useful gift to use in the present ( she gave her a much need blouse)
3. A gift for the future ( she gave her the gift of money to buy something that she may want in the future)
I think that the mother was inspired from “The Christmas Carol” the theme of past,present and future was prevalent.

My sister and I would exchange some of the worst stuff we could find but that has gone by the wayside.
I might have to send her a surprise soon. :)

We might get together for the holidays but Normal gifts are not a part of that anymore.(except for my hub and I)

I suppose one could use that brick for a door stop or a beginning of building a fireplace..?
