Can anyone identify for me this superhero comic or maybe novel series if I describe it?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) May 13th, 2020

Let me preface by saying that the Corona shut-ins have gotten me binge-watching the entire ten seasons of Smallville. I have since become interested in the ‘universes’ of various comic and sci-fi series’ or franchises.

Back when I was really into role playing games, I remember hearing somewhere about the following series

It takes place in the year 1984, but its kind of an alternate timeline or alternate ‘dark universe’ setting—that resembles more the dark, dystopian future.

There is a cabal or league of aging superheroes—one of which has true superpowers, like Superman or Captain America— the others are not ‘true’ superheroes but have gadgets, more like the Batman, Spiderman, or the Green Hornet or Green Arrow. They are all aging and in the waning days of their ability to fight crime (or whatever is their cause) as a dark future lies ahead.

I may be wrong on some of the details I am remembering, but whatever the format *comic books, video games, role playing, novels, movies) I would be very interested in this series, if anyone can help.

Sounds like Civil war. I’m not sure.

Could be Watchmen, or for that matter Mystery Men.

Sounds more like the Incredibles when they have all retired and gained weight and had kids.

I will check these out. All other suggestions welcome.

Please feel free to discuss anything related here. This is social. I or anyone else may learn something to pique my (or someone else’s) interest, in these doldrum times.

Granted, I’ve never actually read the graphic novel (or seen the movie adaptation, for that matter), but from what I know of it that sounds like Watchmen to me.

I think I got SOME of the details wrong, but Watchmen fits the description pretty much as I originally read about it. Thanks, everyone.

Given that the Golden and Silver age of comics / superheroes has passed, and we’re in that Twilight of the Gods, I think a good read might be a dystopian world where classic superheroes are fading with the passage of time, and a rising of a Cthulhuesque age of darkness is upon us.
