Do you feel that there is more or less crime in your town or neighborhood compared with the past?

Asked by Demosthenes (14935points) April 17th, 2022

I’m not asking for statistics; I’m asking what your perception is. The range of “the past” can be whatever it needs to be for your answer.

There is definitely a perception among many in the Bay Area that crime, especially property crime, is more prevalent than it was, say, ten years ago (and statistics do seem to bear this out in some cities even if overall crime is down). “Soft on crime” prosecutors and laws are often blamed. What is the attitude among residents where you live?

“Crime is basically legal here” is a thing I’ve heard many California residents say, especially in regard to the law that theft under $950 is not a felony.

I live in a really small town & we didn’t have much crime before; so, there hasn’t been much change. It seems that most of the crimes we are having right now are the rich folk with high paying government jobs who are lining their own pockets with government funds!!!

One county councilman murdered his own cousin & they’re calling it a domestic dispute. He had his own son go with him for backup just in case something went wrong. My guess is that whatever happened between them would have happened anyway even IF had been 10 years ago!!!

My personal sense is that crime in my home area is trending lower, compared to my feeling over the last 5 years.

Since you’re not asking for stats I won’t offer any, but I’m fairly sure the numbers bear out that violent crime has declined while property crime rate hasn’t changed. BUT even though I live in a small community outside Portland Metro I spend over half my time in working the city, and I was assaulted there in 2016. Subjectively it blurs a lot of the demographic details.

We don’t have much crime here. I don’t think it has changed even though the population has increased quite a bit during COVID. Governor Desantis invited them, and boy did they come!

Crime spiked during COVID—across the whole country.

The major bummer for me, is that soon Mimishu will have my “World’s Best Criminal” award. ;p

“Bwahaha!”

That’s an excellent variation of laughter expressions! Lol & Lmao are so played.

Criminal that I am, I’m going to use it myself, and if I feel like it, I’ll take credit for it too. ;p

I feel that there is less crime today than in the past in the medium sized city where I live and the stats seem to confirm this.

In my immediate neighborhood, no. In neighboring towns, there are more car thefts and incidents where people leave their cars unlocked and the cars are either stolen or rifled through.

House robberies and other crimes, no.

My area has always been relatively safe. There is crime now and then, but it’s like a once in a bluemoon incident. I think the level of crime has always been the same. Or maybe there is some shift that is too insignificant for me to see.

Like @Brian1946, I’m sadden by this. I will have to do something about it ~
