What physiologically happens when you gulp too much water, and hurts all the way down?

It felt like my esophagus would burst. Its mostly better now. Was a 7 out of 10 for pain.

It’s likely an esophagal spasm.

This happens to me sometimes, usually when I’m gulping down cold water first thing in the day.

Hmm. I remember once when my mother (then probably in her thirties) gulped down a glass of cold water first thing and promptly fainted. I’ve always wondered what caused that. Spasm choked her?

@Jeruba Some people faint from pain.

Oh, I feel like I’m gonna die. All I know is it hurts like heck!
