What specifically are Trump and his co-conspirators being charged of in Georgia?

Asked by LostInParadise (31917points) August 17th, 2023

The news is not very clear on what it is exactly that they are accused of doing. It does not help much that some of the charges involve RICO violations. It was my understanding that they tried to change the election results in Georgia. Is this correct and, if so, how did they go about doing it and what prevented them from getting away with it?

@ragingloli , But what was the purpose of these various criminal acts? Was the intention to have Georgia’s electors be for Trump and, if so, why doesn’t anyone come right out and say so?

I believe there was some sort of break in involved in stealing votes and information of the voting registers as well. It was a long time ago. Anyhow they thought at first this was just an incident of some rogue Trumpers doing this and they found that these people were in contact before the break-in with Guiliani and Sydney Powell and some others in Trump’s camp. So since it involved more people then they can throw conspiracy and use the Rico Act to get everyone involved. I do not know more than that. I don’t know if they were paid to do this. Either way, it was an illegal act and the lawyers knew this and stayed involved with them over email. I’m waiting for the movie if the outcome is good. They don’t even have to get Trump for this to make me happy. Guiliani was always a dirty little criminal himself.
Ioh, I found an easier break down of the charges. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/rudy-giulianis-2020-election-charges-explained

Trump is charged with

Violating Georgias racketeering act. Trump, “while associated with an enterprise, unlawfully conspired” through a pattern of fraudulent activity to change the outcome of the election.

Solicitation of violation of oath by public officer: Trump is facing three counts on this, including one related to a January 2021 phone call between Mr Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, during which prosecutors allege Mr Trump asked Mr Raffensperger to “unlawfully” alter or adjust the the certified returns for presidential electors

Conspiracy to impersonate a public officer: The indictment alleges Trump unlawfully conspired to influence certain individuals to falsely act as elected officials “with intent to mislead”

Conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree: The charge alleges that Trump intended to defraud the public by conspiring to make a false document titled “CERTIFICATE OF THE VOTES OF THE 2020 ELECTORS FROM GEORGIA”

False statements and writings and filing false documents.

Too many offenses to mention. But they’re listed in all sorts of other places.

Keep in mind that it was MY VOTE that Trump was trying to steal. I live in Georgia and voted for Biden (along with several million of my fellow residents) and Trump tried to disenfranchise ME and others for his own purposes.

For most of you, this is a theoretical issue and Fulton County is a quaint building in Atlanta.

For us Georgians, this was grand theft election.

Trump and his supporters tried to bully election officials into finding Trump votes that weren’t there. This clip from PBS makes clear what went on. PBS NewsHour

This is what should be emphasized. Trump tried to steal the election. Compared to this charge, everything else is of secondary importance, like accusing a murderer of jaywalking.

@elbanditoroso Trump is accused of conspiring to change the outcome of the 2020 election. The attempt failed but I think we’re all pretty shocked that the attempt was made whether we live in Georgia or elsewhere in the US. After all Trump came close to bullying his way to the presidency and by stealing the votes of Georgians he was stealing the votes of the majority of voters in the United States.
