The ONLY thing you can do with another application open is listen to music. And no, in no way will this damage your iphone. It’ll just drain the battery a little bit faster.

yes you can use your ipod on your iphone at the same time when you surf on it, as well as download 2 apps from appstore at once.

the iphone inherts OSX’s mutlitasking environent, but apple simply locks it down, you don’t realize, but the mail app can check for mail in the background or the best example, the phone and SMS app will continue to recieve calls and texts. You’ll notice a little play icon when the music is playing in the top right hand corner.

Thanks to all of you for the information!

You can make a phone call and fluther as long as you use wifi for the data (at least I find that mobile data and phone don’t work together).

philo23's avatar

@lightlyseared you’ll find you can actually use fluther or any website during a call as long as the call is over EDGE, 3G or Wifi.

waterskier2007's avatar

@ philo, you cant make a call while accessing data on EDGE

philo23's avatar

@waterskier2007, i’m pretty sure you can. As i’m sure that was on of the features of the original iPhone.

I’m not 100% on this though, so fair do’s if i’m wrong.

You can write a note or edit/create a contact while you are on the (speaker)phone.

waterskier2007's avatar

no, that was the problem with the old iphone, edge does not allow you to make calls and access the internet at the same time

philo23's avatar

Fair do’s i’m sure i’d read some where about people confused how Apple did it, but alas i did not have the original iPhone.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@philo In the UK I can’t make a call and use mobile data (ie EDGE or 3G) at the same time. I can make a call and use a wifi connection. When a call connects the EDGE icon disappears off the screen all together.

So, there is a big difference between the original iPhone and the new one?
I have the original.

philo23's avatar

@basp, the only main difference is the new 3G network, nothing else, apart from physical appearance.
and obviously the speed on the internets using the mobile internet

@Lightlyseared you sure about 3G, i’m sure i’ve done it before.

waterskier2007's avatar

you can get a call (it will come in) depending on which type of cellular tower you are connected. regardless of which type of tower you have if you do happen to get the call it will shut your browser and you cant access internet during the call.

actually @philo, there is also GPS, louder speaker, better earpiece quality. and i know because i had both

philo23's avatar

@waterskeir2007, very true, i overlooked those features sorry. The loud speaker was there previously, it just wasnt as loud.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@philo In my experience during long calls with my mum even with 3G it never connects. I admit it does look like its trying to load the page but the browser always times out before anything happens.

philo23's avatar

@Lightlyseared mmmm this sounds like something for me to investigate next time i’m bored….

you can listen to music or watch videos while on a phone call

waterskier2007's avatar

no you can’t. your music or video stops playing when you initiate a phone call

adri027's avatar

No…while your on a phone call you go to your iPod or YouTube and you can use it I’ve tried it..you have to have your 3g or wifi on for the videos

waterskier2007's avatar

oh if you initiate music or video after you start the call?
