In '96 or '97 there was a sort of book going around the fake hacker community that used warez etc. What was that book called?

This book had things in it like how to pick locks, make bombs, etc.

Oh! The Anarchist Cookbook! My brother printed that out and hid it under his mattress. He never did anything from it, though. Wait, no! We made “napalm” out of styrofoam and gasoline one time.

Edit: does anyone else have any anarchist cookbook memories? I’d love to try some of the phreaking stuff in there, but I don’t think that a black box works with cell phones…

Jolly Roger’s Cookbook. The Anarchist Cookbook was around long before the late 90’s.

Oh, omph! Wow! I think that we’re talking about the same text file, but it was apparently frequently, and incorrectly, called “The Anarchist Cookbook.”

tonedef is right. I’ve probably got a few old copies of it and it was indeed labeled The Anarchist Cookbook

A lot of ‘phreaking’ depended on a payphone to rip off or route your calls through. It’s a different age now and clicker boxes don’t work anymore.

If you want a ‘new’ version of this type of thing, you might consider subscribing to 2600. It’s the only magazine that I have a lifetime subscription to.

I recently purchased the 2600 anthology, and I listen to the “Off the Hook” podcast that Emmanuel Goldstein produces. I don’t think that I can subscribe to the magazine until I’ve legitimately “hacked” something. At this point, I’m just really interested in the culture and history.

It’s not really a hacker magazine. It’s a vulnerability magazine. Some of the stuff is as easy as hitting back on the get a job here terminals at Walmart so you can collect everyone’s social that uses the machine. That is crazy bad design.

They all start with a essay on the world of today and there’s a bunch of funny reader letters published. I’ve given a couple copies of the magazine out to people I’ve tutored.

Xpress, do you want a copy of it? I might have one kicking around on my file server.

I’ve picked up a copy and read it before. I just want to read the anthology first, so that I’m not a huge poser ;)

hah! You’re never a poser if you’re learning something. You’re bettering yourself. Just read it in your own home and don’t go to Starbucks and make a big huff about reading a hacker magazine.
