Do more people smoke cigarettes or pot or both?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) December 3rd, 2008

I know a number of people who smoke cigarettes and a number of people who smoke pot and a few people who smoke both. I would imagine it’s difficult to measure because of the differences in legality. Obviously, people can smoke cigarettes in public and while it is frowned upon people do not need to hide it because it is legal. However, because pot-smoking is illegal, it is more difficult to gauge who does and who doesn’t because you don’t see crowds of pot-smokers outside the student center at 2 in the afternoon. Just to clarify, I don’t think either one is wrong or right, I’m just honestly curious as to which is more popular.

Most people do it, just flat out, because it feels great, to them. It is an emotional release just like alcohol.
For my best friend, he does pot because he can’t afford valium, or other legal mental drugs.

Probably the people who smoke pot often smoke cigarettes too, it’s nice to have a cigarette whilst high…

That’s true!

I think most people who smoke pot also smoke tobacco at least occasionally.

Well numerically there are more tobacco smokers, especially when you factor in countries like China and Japan and Dubai where marijuana is extremely illegal and even small amounts are punished severely. The usage of tobacco according to the World Health Organization is 1.1 billion people, which is roughly one sixth of the world population.

Here in Canada both are really common to the point that smoking mary jane on the street is not a rare thing. There is a fair overlap in pot and cigarette smokers, but there’s also a big overlap with all drug users smoking cigarettes as well. But it’s also common to see people who do not smoke tobacco but who do smoke marijuana. I’d say it’s around 50/50 here.

Wait you see people smoking pot on the street? Is it legal there?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

I smoke cigarettes but I don’t smoke weed.

@toocutetolive: I see people smoking weed on the streets in my city all the time and it’s definitely not legal. They just don’t care.

arnbev959's avatar

I don’t smoke in public; not worth the risk, but plenty of people do.

@tocute: yeah, people at this school will kind of hide at the corners of buildings late at night and smoke pot. It’s a little startling when you see someone who looks like they’re sad and depressed and it just turns out they’re trying very hard to not get noticed.

I’ve never smoked tobacco.

dynamicduo's avatar

No it’s not legal, but if a cop catches you they’ll often not arrest or charge you, they’ll just take it away from you. On Canada Day, or when any marijuana protests go on, they don’t even bother trying to stop the smokers so long as no one does anything stupid.

They do crack down on grow ops and bust grow houses, but for people carrying just a bit for personal use, they really don’t care. Many of our politicians have admitted to smoking a bit in their lifetimes and no one uses it against em.

Oh. that’s interesting

I know for myself I don’t smoke cigs at all, I used to smoke and then just lost all interest in it. However I smoke alot of dope, my friends smoke cigs and dope… and I have even noticed they put the tobacco from a smoke in with the dope sometimes as well.

My husband works in management for a city utility where the workers are subject to random drug screenings. He will get a phone call from the Occupational Health Dept. and they will tell him to bring in one of the employees for screening, no notice, no warning. Recently, he had to bring in someone who was an excellent employee for many years and was close to retirement. He tested positive for marijuana and was immediately fired. My husband felt very bad for him because he was such a good employee. He lost his livelihood and his retirement. But they all know that they are subject to random drug screenings. He gambled and lost. I think there are a lot more people who smoke pot than anyone realizes.

I smoke pot and I used to smoke cigarettes but quit before I became too addicted. I’ve walked down the street with my friend while smoking pot too and no one really cared. Obviously we wouldn’t purposely light up in front of a cop, but we didn’t hide it from anyone else.
My answer: I smoke pot, not cigarettes.

I tried to smoke cigarettes decades ago, but hated it, and I haven’t since then. I wanted to try pot, and did, and for a few years, I smoked it maybe four times a year. After I turned thirty, that declined to about once a year, and when I turned forty, it stopped altogether. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t think it’s good to do it all the time, as some of my friends do. I just don’t do it.

Reminds me that the last time I had a jam/recording session with my musician friends, they all smoked dope and I didn’t. I was totally with them, though, verbally and musically, so I guess it didn’t affect anything. I asked them why they did it, and got something like “to take the edge off.” I don’t really understand this edge. For me, that mystical connection state is always there. Oddly enough, all it takes is a little thought (but the right thoughts) for me to get there.

Personally, I don’t smoke pot because I don’t feel the need to be in an altered state. I get that people do it for that reason a fair amount (like your musician friends, daloon, at least, that what it sounds like to me). I guess I just worry about my friends who do it a lot because a number of them do it as an escape.

Anyway, thanks everyone for answering, it is something I’ve wondered about a lot.

both is the best way to go… but cigarettes are horrible for your health and I wish I had never started haha

I smoke pot a lot and I smoke cigarettes a lot. I smoke less cigarettes when im smoking more pot and vice versa. It just depends on the person I guess.
BUT people I know that have been smoking pot ritualistically (and do it in public) are usually the people who are starting to forget that it’s illegal, and as far as I’m concerned that’s a very dumb idea.

I have a few friends who started smoking cigs because they smoked weed. I personally just smoke weed, I think cigs are totally gross.
But I do like a couple puffs after blowing down on some weed, it definitely gets me roasted.

Knotmyday's avatar

I smoke Macanudos.

Daloon: ...exaaactly.
