Can wearing fake glasses that has plastic lense hurt your eyes?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) December 5th, 2008

When i say ‘hurt’ I really mean, if wearing fake glasses can cause eyes to decrease in vision. Today I just recently bought these fake glasses at a store. I found them really cool. My friend suggested i poke out the lense or it’ll ‘hurt’ my eyes. The explanation to why was because eyes are not used to seeing that plastic lense in front if it. Concentrating on it would be different and difficult for your eyes. After hearing that, and being the paranoid teenager that i am, I stabbed my fake glasses to realize that the lense can’t be removed/ poked out.
I decided to take precautions and not always wear those glasses.

It seems like a reasonable answer, but is it true? Does it really decrease your eye vision and hurt it?

If they distort your vision at all, yes they could hurt your eyes.

… Somehow, some way, I might be wrong… But that said, no, I really, really don’t think it can harm your vision. Not if it’s just clear plastic. That’s kind of like saying staring through a window all day could harm your vision, which sounds more than a little ridiculous.

I think if anything, your friend was confused. If you wear prescription glasses that belong to someone else, that can absolutely harm your vision.

Are you just talking about plain “lenses”. Unless you mean reading glasses, I don’t think see how that would hurt your eyes. It’s just like looking out the window. I mean, people wear sunglasses all the time and I’ve never heard of that ruining anybody’s eyesight. I wouldn’t sweat it.

Lol. i never thot it could hurt your eyes either.
They pretty much are just plain plastic lense. clear.. easily dirtied by fingerprints, but still clear.

=D well. that makes me feel a bit better, because i was a little obsessed with the fake glasses, and hearing that it ‘may’ harm my eyes, i was afraid. lol

I don’t like wearing glasses :( Though I prefer them to contacts.
No, they shouldn’t damage your eyes if they don’t have a prescription (that isn’t yours).

If it is just a plastic or glass lense with no prescription and they are not reading glasses, they should not hurt your eyes. It’s just like staring out a car window for hours on a trip, or looking through a telescope. A piece of plastic or glass won’t do any harm if it is not broken.
