Naming a new business?

Asked by akmcg (149points) December 11th, 2008

I am setting up a new consulting business and need a name so that it reflects the work I do (Public health) but I don’t want to lock myself into one narrow niche like “environmental” or “education”. I have a Masters degree in public health and I will be doing grant writing & funds acquisition, project management & evaluation, and/or designing & conducting trainings. All in the realm of public health which includes environmental, health education & promotion, disease prevention, capacity building, and community development/engagement. I want to reek of competance, reliability, accessibility, sound judgement, down to earth nature and clear communication. Core beliefs include: empowerment, sustainability, and action oriented/results. Any ideas?

I’d get with a branding and marketing professional to work this out for best results… leave this kind of crucial stuff to the pros.

Welcome to Fluther BTW.

Dave’s idea is smart.

Great job describing what you want out of the name, though. Any key images that could represent your business? Personally, I can’t think of anything that would be an effective name. But I’m sure someone here will.

Both good points. Naming a new business is a long and serious project (if you want it to be).

I think focusing in on some key imagery you want to work around is useful. Also, maybe you could list a few names that you like, so we could get a sense of your taste.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll do a bit more research as far as local pros go in my area for this kind of thing.
Images that come to mind are bridges, connectors.

By thinking deeply about what you want you’ll be giving your branding people much more to work with. You’re on the right track.

Good luck!

modern or traditional?

A brand consultant is the best bet, but that will cost you. If you can’t afford that start with your core values and beliefs. Make mind maps (thinkmap.com) of strong words that describe your company. Then you can try combining and abstracting words to form a new idea: like nanosapiens™ derived from the idea of human based nanotechnology. The next steps involve making sure the name isn’t already taken, making sure it is available on the web, and making sure it doesn’t mean vulgar or silly things in other languages (example: chevy nova = won’t go in Spanish) That is just a start for you.

Mind maps, I like it. I’ll look into this and local brand consultants just in case I can afford it afterall. Thanks to all!!

Avoid acronyms.

Probably on the traditional side. And yes, I agree, the world has enough acronyms already. I think I’ve decided on a name which isn’t very creative but since I live in such a conservative state, it will work here.
