What are the cheapest alternative spring break programs?

Asked by advilicious (15points) December 11th, 2008

Hey all. Does anyone have any good recommendations of programs that run alternative spring break for college students on the cheap? I don’t feel like bugging everyone for donations, I just want to find a good cheap program where I can volunteer for a week, meet some other college students, and see a new city.

Any ideas?

Where are you located?
What are your travel options?
What is your major/area of study?

I am in the northeast U.S. I’d like to stay in the country (but bonus points if I can go somewhere warm…).I do not care what the area of study is.

Thanks again.

There are some Habitat-for-Humanity-like programs in Nicaragua. You can help build a house for a needy family. Your college or university should have some ideas…maybe under the “study abroad” program. I have a young friend who went to Nicaragua for his spring break and did just that. Sweat equity in exchange for humble room and board.
